Tradition

The beauty of Kissamos is that it is a Greek town that has embraced tourism but not been spoilt by it. The visitor can experience local life and tradition, from the everyday to the special cultural events organized during the summer season.

In recent years it has also developed alternative sustainable touristic solutions such as eco tourism that is the new magnet attracting hikers from all over the world and nature lovers.

It is a hospitable town, offering all needed facilities of a self-sufficient town, such as banks, post office, internet cafes, health center, supermarkets and stores, tavernas, cafes and bars. It also has a very pleasant seaside promenade lined with entertainment locations open all day long.

To do…

The archeological museum of Kissamos, situated in the central square Stratigou Tzanakaki, is a recently renovated listed building housing a treasure trove of local archeological finds from the Hellenistic and Roman periods – most notably very impressive mosaics.

One and a half kilometers from the centre of town is the picturesque fishing port with two tavernas were you can enjoy the Cretan cuisine flavors of fresh local fish and extra virgin olive oil, and a little further on the larger commercial port that links Kissamos by a ferry service to Kythera , the Peloponnese and Piraeus. From this port there is also a daily pleasure cruise to the stunning island of Gramvousa and lagoon of Balos.

Between the two ports is the surprising little 10th century church (reconstructed in 1947) St. John Damiali built into the rockface and opposite a tunnel leading to Damiali beach – a pebbly cove with crystal clear water that will enchant you.

Drapanias

Drapanias is a seaside village with some tourist development in recent years, and along the beach road there are a few cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy a drink or meal by the sea. The village is well known for its Venetian Villa Trevizan.

Villa Trevizan is a 17ath Century Venetian villa in the district of Mithimna Kissamos and is one of 120 feudal houses
of Venetian origin that are dotted around the Cretan countryside. It combined High Renaissance architecture in an advanced technical stone building. Although it is not in its complete state (missing its roof and intermeadiate floor)
it is a fine example of Cretan-Venetian architecture that has weathered the years and still remains impressive.
